Foundation Program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (1-year program)

Introduction  

The program aims to equip physicians working in the Emergency Departments (EDs) with the fundamental knowledge and clinical expertise in the practice of pediatric emergency care. In addition, the physicians will learn pediatric resuscitation, history taking, and application of the conceptual framework of simulation-based modular education in a clinical setting. The program will consist of weekly sessions which will be facilitated by national and international leading experts in pediatric emergency medicine.

  • Duration: 12 months

  • Mode of Education: Hybrid; online didactics and simulations, in-person skills training and simulations during workshops.
  • Classes in a Week: 1 online class per week
    3 days workshops done twice a year
  • Duration of Class: 3 hours online class
    8 hours per day for 3 days during workshops
  • Timing: 3 pm to 6 pm (online)
    8:30 am to 4:30 pm (in-person workshops)
  • Examination: Pre-test, Mid-term, Post-test

Teaching Methodologies

Online learning on Moodle/Google Classroom. Ed puzzle for reading materials Video didactics. Affinity learning, Virtual Resus room, Full-code application for online simulation, synchronous via zoom and asynchronously via student profile.

Program Objectives

By the end of 1 year of the certification program learners would be able to:

  • Develop knowledge and skills in pediatric resuscitation.
  • Learn focused emergency pediatric history taking and physical examination.
  • Discuss specialty topics relevant to Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM).
  • Use the conceptual framework of simulation-based education as applied in a clinical setting.
  • Develop the knowledge, psychomotor skills and professional traits of safe PEM physicians by using blended learning techniques.
  • Provide highly specialized healthcare to infants and children including stabilization, triage, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.

Scope of Practice

Online:

  • FPEM is delivered online via Zoom meetings once a week for the entire year. Utilizing a learner-centered approach, students have access to block-related materials on LMS in advance and the online class is dedicated to collaborative discussion, problem-solving, peer-to-peer interaction, and individualized support with our diverse international and national faculty. followed by VRR cases and Affinity cases.

Onsite Workshop:

  • These are conducted 3-4 times/year at IHHN, Karachi, utilizing Simple App, Resu Monitor App, Awesome Ultrasound Simulator App, Deep scope App, ultrasound machines, and task trainers. The aim is to equip students with hands-on practice for essential EM procedural skills in simulation models and real-time.

Graduation Requirement:

  • For successful completion of the certification, learners must attend at least 70% of the sessions and obtain an average score of 70% (mid-term and final examination).
