Basics of Pediatric Oncology – Pharmacy Course

Introduction  

The Basics of Pediatric Oncology Pharmacy Course offers pharmacists and pharmacy technicians essential knowledge in pediatric oncology. Through online lectures and interactive sessions, the course covers drug classifications, mechanisms of action, drug interactions, chemotherapy protocols, supportive care, safe handling of hazardous drugs, and proper waste disposal in pediatric oncology pharmacy.

Program Details 

  • Duration: 12 Weeks

  • Mode of Education: Online/LMS
  • Classes per Week: Two weeks to complete a module (self-paced, recorded sessions). Following each module, an interactive session will take place on Zoom
  • Duration of Class: Recorded sessions: 30 – 45 minutes, Interactive Zoom sessions: 1.5 – 2 hours
  • Examination: End-of-module exam

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of the BPO course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the basics of common childhood cancers.
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of oncology pharmacists in chemotherapy dispensing in different patient settings.
  • Discuss the classification of chemotherapeutic drugs.
  • Explain chemotherapy protocols in pediatric oncology.
  • Discuss chemotherapy dose modifications and side-effect management.
  • Recognize the importance of supportive care medications in pediatric oncology.
  • Implement best practices for sterile compounding and safe handling of hazardous medications, including spill management and waste disposal.
  • Understand the multidisciplinary approach to ensure patient safety, worker safety, and environmental protection from hazardous drugs.
  • Apply USP 797 and 800 guidelines in chemotherapy preparation and dispensing processes.

Scope of Practice

By the end of the course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of common pediatric cancers and pharmacotherapeutic approaches for treatment. They will also be equipped to incorporate evidence-based best practices for the safe preparation, handling, and dispensing of chemotherapeutic agents in their professional roles.
