Introduction  

The Basics of Pediatric Oncology (BPO) is a comprehensive course that equips pediatricians, family medicine physicians, residents (pediatrics and family medicine), and medical officers with the knowledge and skills to effectively suspect and diagnose common childhood cancers. It will also equip them to provide initial stabilization, treatment, and referral to the pediatric oncology units. Through online lectures the course content will cover a wide spectrum, ranging from understanding the basics of common childhood cancer, the early signs and symptoms of pediatric cancers, to utilizing available resources for accurate diagnosis, initial management, and facilitating timely referrals to specialized centers. It also aims to educate the healthcare workers about offering support to the patients and families going through the challenges of pediatric malignancy.

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of the BPO course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the signs and symptoms and red flags of pediatric malignancy.
• Analyze the history and examination findings of pediatric malignancies.
• Choose appropriate laboratory and radiological diagnostic tools for further evaluation.
• Develop initial management plans for pediatric patients with suspected malignancy.
• Refer the patient timely and safely with proper documentation to pediatric oncologists for further treatment.
• Provide supportive care/ palliative care for patients with pediatric malignancy.
• Counsel the patients who are diagnosed with pediatric malignancy, along with their families.

Scope of Practice

At the end of this course participants will have basic knowledge and skills set important to suspect, identify, stabilize, and initially manage a child with cancer.

They will be able to handle pediatric oncological emergencies effectively and in a timely manner followed by a safe referral to a tertiary care hospital.
