Providing compassionate care to the patients and their families for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) has always been a vision of the Indus Hospital and Health Network. We have taken another leap toward achieving our vision by introducing a hospital-based community engagement program. The program was started in December 2023 and engages students from different colleges which include the Indus College of Nursing & Midwifery, Indus College of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, Indus College of Family Medicine & Public Health, Indus College of Medical Technology & Allied Health as well as Blood Transfusion Services. Students will be actively participating in liaison with the Psychosocial and Clinical Service Management Departments of the hospital for community engagement.

Scope

The scope of the program is to foster a culture of community engagement and empower undergraduate students of Medical and Allied Health in providing simple and basic care to the people coming to Indus Hospital.

Benefits of Community Engagement

The program will enable students to develop an empathic realization of the challenges patients face during their hospital visits and will give them firsthand experience of engaging in activities that will improve their communication, teamwork abilities, empathy, advocacy, and creativity.
Through their rotations in pediatric wards, radiology departments, outpatient departments, patient waiting areas, and children’s play areas, students will be involved in varieties of activities like playing and storytelling with children, guiding patients to different locations in the hospital, and facilitating in maintaining records.

Credit hours awarded in this program will help students in their application to post-graduate teaching programs.

Way Forward

Our plan includes the extension of community engagement services beyond hospital boundaries. We will engage students in robust community activities that will cultivate lifelong habits of giving back to the community.
