Certification Program in Emergency Medicine (1-year program)
Introduction
The Certification Program in Emergency Medicine (CPEM) is a 12-month competency-based training that aims to equip physicians working in emergency departments (EDs) with fundamental knowledge and clinical expertise in the care of patients who are severely ill or injured. It was developed by Emergency Medicine (EM) specialists from the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), Karachi and Brigham and Women’s Hospital – a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School Boston, USA – and launched in July 2018. It is now led by a diverse multinational faculty from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and IHHN.
Program Details
- Duration: 12 months

3 days for each in-person workshop - Duration of Class: 3 hours for online weekly class including simulation

Program Objectives
By the end of 1 year of the certification program learners would be able to:
- Improve clinical management of critically ill patients in the Emergency Department.
- Practice life-saving procedures knowing their indications, contraindications and complications.
- Develop interest in Emergency Medicine-based research and produce scholarly work.
- Develop interest in Emergency Medicine-based research and produce scholarly work.
Participate in journal clubs and morbidity & mortality meetings to stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in Emergency Medicine.
Scope of Practice
- Doctors working in emergency rooms without any formal EM residency training.
- Medical graduates interested in pursuing EM as a career.
- Fellows of other specialties who are currently working as emergency doctors and want to improve their EM skills and contribute to capacity building in their own area of influence.

Curriculum Notes
- Blocks are four weeks long.
- Conferences are held on Thursdays for approximately 3-4 hours and led by a visiting faculty member virtually.
- Most sessions will have a recorded lecture/recorded lectures that participants must watch prior to the session in order to prepare for the session.
- Participants must complete the evaluations as directed at the end of the conference in order to log their attendance.
- The conferences in each block will be comprised of Didactics, Journal Club, Case-Based Learning, Imaging Review, Case Review, and Simulation, among others.
- PowerPoint slides, journal articles, and other study materials will be available in the Google Classroom approximately one week before the sessions.
- There will be opportunities for additional conference credit for leading journal club (1 credit), completing a reflective writing piece (may complete up to three, three-page write-ups throughout the year for 5 hours of conference credit each – must include a case presentation and discussion with references), developing a quiz (may develop one 10-question quiz for 2 hours of conference credit throughout the year), or completing a QI project (20 hours of conference credit).
- Participants are encouraged to log cases seen in the ED clinically during their training – at least one case per shift.
- Participants are encouraged to log all procedures (ultrasounds and other procedures) completed during the course; participants must adhere to local supervisory/credentialling protocols for performing procedures.
- Five times throughout the year, visiting faculty will be present for intensive in-person workshops/sessions (highlighted in the following curriculum).
- Students must attend at least 70% of the sessions to receive a certificate and score at least 70% or above average between the midterm and final examinations to receive a certificate.
