IUHS’s BSPH Students Visit Baba Island
July 24, 2023 – The Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) students at Indus College of Family Medicine and Public Health (ICFMPH) wrapped up Semester 1 on a high note with a field trip to Baba Island. This excursion provided a valuable opportunity for the students to witness and grasp the practical implementation of primary care practices and healthcare services in remote and underserved island communities.
Setting sail from Kemari Harbor, the short boat ride led the students to the twin islands of Baba and Bhitt, densely populated but often overlooked areas. The focal point of the trip was the Martin-Dow Indus Health Network Community Health Center, part of Indus Hospital & Health Network’s Primary Care Program, located on Baba Island. This site was chosen to offer the students firsthand insight into primary care practices.
Guided by dedicated Community Engagement Counseling (CEC) Health workers and Dr. Tooba Shehbaz, the students embarked on a comprehensive community visit. The trip encompassed tours of the healthcare facility, an exploration of the entire community, an in-depth understanding of community engagement strategies, a stop at the EPI center, and interactions with local community members.
The field trip to Baba Island proved to be an enriching and transformative experience for the BSPH students at ICFMPH as they were able to gain profound insights into the challenges faced by these island inhabitants and comprehend their unique lifestyles.
By witnessing the realities of healthcare provision in such marginalized communities, the students are now better equipped to analyze and address health issues effectively. Such hands-on experiences are instrumental in shaping future public health professionals who can make a significant impact on the well-being of underserved communities.
